Mark Grimes, a longtime ward resident heavily involved in sports groups, won the election in Ward 6 after the former councillor ran for the NDP in the 2003 provincial election. Grimes has close ties with former
Parkdale-High Park councillor Chris Korwin-Kuczynski, a hard-line
right-winger, and has hired some of Korwin-Kuczynski’s former office
staff. Grimes takes a hard line on policing, and received the
endorsement of the Police Union. Grimes was also involved with the 'Keep the Chief' campaign to renew Julian Fantino's contract. Mark Grimes is on the Policy and Finance Committee and the Exhibition Place Board. Encompassing all of Etobicoke south of the Gardiner Expressway including neighbourhoods such as Mimico, New Toronto and Long Branch, Ward 6 has one of the lower rates of immigrants compared to the rest of Toronto. 45.3% of its residents are first-generation immigrants, compared to the Toronto average of 58.3%. |
