Adam Giambrone won the 2003 election in Ward 18 after incumbent Mario Silva did not run for re-election. Silva subsequently was elected as the federal representative for Davenport, replacing former MP Charles Caccia (who did not seek the Liberal nomination). While Silva was clearly a business/developer representative on council, Adam Giambrone will be a progressive. He is an archeologist by training and a long time NDP political activist who endorsed David Miller for Mayor. This young, articulate politician has plenty of talent and promises to play a major role in the political life of the city. Adam Giambrone is on the Works Committee, the Nominating Committee, the Toronto Transit Commission and the Exhibition Place Board. Ward 18 is home to Little Portugal and Dufferin Grove Park, amongst other neighbourhoods, and almost one-third of residents are of Portuguese background. The ward has one of the highest rates of TTC usage in the city, with 41% of residents taking public transit to work. The average household income in the ward is $50,390, compared to a city-wide average of $69,125.
